Hot US CPI lifts rate hike bets and knocks gold lower

Inflation rose to 3.7% in September, driven by fuel, and bond yields moved toward 24-year highs.

What happened

US inflation rose to 3.7% in the year to September, up from 3.4% in the 12 months to August and above forecasts, driven by higher petrol prices. The gasoline index rose 9.1 percent in September, and core CPI came in at 2.6% year-on-year, 0.1% higher than anticipated. Bond yields targeted new 24-year highs, and spot gold slipped 1.5% as the report boosted Fed October rate hike expectations.

Why it matters

The Fed raised rates at its last meeting, so a hotter print keeps further hikes in play. The 10-year Treasury yield stood at 5.21% as of October 13, 2026, up +25 bp over the month. Gold pays no yield, and our data show it -5.61% over the past month and -22.76% from its 52-week high as of October 14, 2026.
